A Message from Gerard Arpey

Dear Colleagues:

By now you know that today the company filed for protection under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. After much thought and deliberation, the AMR Board of Directors concluded that this was the best step to secure the company's future – and indeed, I have no doubt that with restructured costs and more degrees of freedom to run the business, American Airlines will emerge from bankruptcy protection as a more efficient, more competitive, and stronger company.

Restructuring through bankruptcy will no doubt be a challenging process, and it's no secret that we have tried exceptionally hard over the last decade to avoid this outcome. But the process also represents an opportunity to rebuild AA in a way that assures it will not just survive, but thrive and win in the global marketplace.

I respect the decision of the Board of Directors to take this path, and I am grateful for their request that I continue serving as your Chairman and Chief Executive. However, after careful consideration, I concluded that my remaining in those roles would not be best for the company. In my view, executing the Board's plan will require not only a reevaluation of every aspect of our business, but also the leadership of a new Chairman and CEO who will bring restructuring experience and a different perspective to the process. That is why I informed the Board of my decision to retire from the company.

Those who know me well will understand that idleness is not in my nature, and so it is my intention to accept one of the offers that have come my way over the years. I have decided to join the Emerald Creek Group, an investment firm.

With my full support, the Board has appointed Tom Horton Chairman and CEO. Although Tom has spent over 20 years with American, the time he has spent outside the company has given him a unique perspective to draw upon as he leads the company through this phase and beyond. I am confident that he will lead American Airlines to a successful future.

I want to emphasize what an honor it has been for me to help lead this great company. American Airlines has been my home for three decades, and while the last decade in particular has been enormously challenging for all of us, it has nonetheless been a pleasure and a privilege to work shoulder to shoulder with all of you. Together we have made incredible progress, despite long odds and enormous adversity.

I confess that my heart is heavy today. But any sadness I feel in leaving the company I love is outweighed by my gratitude for the thirty enormously challenging and exciting years American Airlines has given me – and even more so, for the friendship and camaraderie of the best team in the airline business. The men and women of American Airlines have met challenge after challenge with perseverance, skill, determination and grace, and I know you will continue to do so for many years to come.

I wish you all my very best. May God bless you and keep you, and may He guide you to the success you so deeply deserve.

A Message from Chairman and CEO Tom Horton

Dear Colleagues:

Today, we took an action that is the necessary and correct path for us to take - and take now - to become a more efficient, financially stronger, and more competitive airline.

We believe that taking decisive action today will allow American Airlines and American Eagle to restructure so that we can emerge from Chapter 11 well-positioned to assure the company's long term viability and its ability to compete effectively in the marketplace. It is the right decision – and the right time – for our company and its future.

I realize this news might be difficult to absorb; change is never easy. We will do our very best to keep you informed, understanding that there will be many questions we are not able to answer right away. I can certainly tell you that we expect to continue to provide employee wages, healthcare coverage, vacation, and other benefits, without interruption.

As each of us begins to process this news, we must look beyond the moment to consider the powerful assets of our company and the exceptional strengths we have as we enter into this process: one of the most recognized brands in any industry, our unmatched AAdvantage program, our global network and alliances, the innovation and dedication of our employees, and the loyalty of our customers. We will also have the youngest fleet in the industry, giving us more flexibility and the opportunity to build and grow our network down the road. Together, these form our foundation for greater future opportunity. And now we have the potential to overcome our last hurdle by achieving a competitive cost structure, returning to both financial health and a position of industry leadership.

As we work to achieve our goals, our customers' safety, comfort, and travel experience must remain, as always, our top priority. Their satisfaction ultimately determines whether we succeed and are able to shape a successful future for our company.

The people of American have worked tirelessly and honorably to overcome the challenges we've confronted over the past decade, and we made incredible progress against all the odds. Yet, in spite of all our progress, other factors evolved around us to make our road ahead that much tougher. The impact of our significant cost disadvantage compared to our now-larger competitors, all of which restructured their costs and debt through Chapter 11, has intensified in recent weeks due to global economic uncertainty, volatile and rising fuel prices, and ever greater competitive challenges. In spite of the uphill battle we've fought, we nevertheless put in place a powerful foundation: we strengthened our network and forged premier global partnerships; invested in our customers' experience, and announced a transformational fleet renewal plan that is the envy of our industry. We confronted our challenges head on, but in the end, we are now faced with the accelerating impact of factors outside our control and a widening cost gap we have not been able to close – a situation that had to change, one way or another. Our Board decided that it was necessary to take this step now to restore our profitability, operating flexibility, and financial strength, before we missed the opportunity.

As I mentioned, achieving a competitive cost structure remains a final challenge that we must overcome. We have one opportunity to do this right, and that requires a comprehensive overhaul of our costs. We can get it done together, recognizing that we are in this together.

One person who has always put our company's interests first is Gerard Arpey. Gerard led American out of its darkest time and fought with all his considerable energy and intelligence to avoid the path we are taking today. In spite of all the headwinds, Gerard had the vision and fortitude to continue laying the foundation for success, the building blocks for our future – and I was proud to be by his side. And in his last decision as CEO, too, his overriding concern was the best interests of the company and his belief that new leadership was the best choice for our path forward. I have rarely encountered a more honorable or principled person and it has been a privilege to work for him and learn from him for the past 26 years. I will personally miss Gerard's daily presence, but I know we can all continue to count on his friendship and encouragement.

American Airlines has a proud history and we will have a successful future. We intend to reinforce our reputation as a global leader known for excellence and innovation, a travel partner customers seek out, and a carrier that serves communities throughout the world.

The coming months will not be easy, but this company has overcome challenges – many in just the past decade – that would have defeated lesser teams. I am confident that your courage, determination, and ingenuity will assure that our company reaffirms its position among the world's premier airlines.

This is the first time travelers will be able to access Ford’s popular Mustang Customizer and share their Mustang creations from the stratosphere for free.

Passengers aboard flights equipped with Gogo’s in-flight Wi-Fi who configure their Mustang will then gain access to Facebook for the duration of their flight. The special promotion starts October 21, 2011 and ends November 18, 2011.

LAN Airlines Surprises Patrons at New York Hot Spot Nuela with Round-Trip Tickets to South America

Moments ago, close to 200 unsuspecting diners were presented with vouchers that can be redeemed for one roundtrip ticket to such thrilling destinations as Ecuador, Peru, Chile, and Argentina. The message will request the winner to send a valid email address to coordinate acceptance of prize. 13. At the time the trip is made, the winner is responsible for carrying all necessary documents such as passports and visas, or any other such documentation, that may be required. Under no circumstances will Sponsor be responsible for difficulties experienced by the winner as a consequence of not having the necessary valid documentation in due order.

Winner agrees to indemnify, defend and hold Sponsor, their respective officers, directors, shareholders, employees, agents and affiliated entities or subsidiaries, harmless from any and all losses, damages, rights, claims and actions of any kind arising in connection with or as a result of the Winner’s acceptance or use of the Prize. Emirates Strengthens Commitment to the United States

Adds Seattle and Dallas/Fort Worth gateways; plus new premium lounge at San Francisco International Airport

NEW YORK - 28 September 2011 – Emirates, one of the world’s fastest growing airlines, unveiled major new expansion plans for the United States today, announcing new services to Seattle and Dallas/Fort Worth as well as enhancements to its premium customer experience at San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

Dallas/Fort Worth and Seattle-Tacoma International Airports will both be served by daily, non-stop flights from 2nd February and 1st March 2012 respectively.

"These new services emphasise Emirates’ confidence in, and long-term commitment to, the United States,” said Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline. “With six gateways offering convenient connectivity from points across the country, customers in the US will find it easier than ever to access our vast global network.”

“Our latest expansion also serves as a powerful indicator of how Emirates continues to invest in products and services even during difficult economic climates,” continued Mr. Clark. “This is because we have always been ahead of the curve in anticipating what is now becoming an accepted truth – that demand for air travel will continue to grow over the long term in spite of the many challenges the industry faces. In making this investment now, Emirates is providing a timely economic boost to the United States whilst ensuring that we are soundly placed to serve America’s future air travel needs.”

Passengers flying Emirates from Seattle and Dallas/Fort Worth will be able to connect seamlessly to points across the Far and Middle East, Indian sub-continent and Africa via the airline’s hub in Dubai.

Emirates’ Seattle route will help to further strengthen the airline’s links with Boeing. Only this month, Boeing predicted a robust outlook for aircraft manufacturing over the next few decades, estimating that there would be demand for approximately 31,000 planes worth $4 trillion by 2030.

Already the largest operator of Boeing 777 aircraft in the world, Emirates last year ordered an additional 30 777-300ERs, bringing its total 777 passenger fleet commitments to 132 aircraft.

"Emirates is not only the world's largest international carrier - it serves as a gateway to an important part of the world," said Bill Bryant, Port of Seattle Commission President. "This direct service connects Seattle to a new region, creating jobs and tourism opportunities for our state."

The Seattle metropolitan area produced US$ 24.2 billion in total exports in 2008, according to a Brookings Institution study, with exports to the United Arab Emirates totalling $2.76 billion USD in 2009. During the same year, Texan exports to the U.A.E. reached over $1.7 billion - representing export growth of more than 192 per cent since 2002.

Emirates’ Seattle service will support key exports from Washington State, including software, sound and television equipment, aircraft parts, medical and surgical supplies, video games and foodstuffs; headed for markets including the United Arab Emirates, China, Japan, India and Hong Kong.

Commodities piped between Dallas/Fort Worth and the UAE include oil and gas industry related machinery, spares and high-tech equipment. A belly-hold capacity of 15 tonnes on each Emirates flight will help facilitate this trade.

"This monumental announcement from Emirates brings a new and highly valued international airline partner to Dallas/Fort Worth," said Jeffrey P. Fegan, CEO of DFW International Airport. "Emirates daily nonstop service between DFW and Dubai connects two global super-hub portals for U.S. travelers to the Far and Middle East, the Indian sub-continent and Africa on a trendsetting airline."

In addition to the new gateways, Emirates will also open a new customer lounge at San Francisco International Airport in November.

“Now customers throughout Northern California and beyond can look forward to the unique and award-winning Emirates lounge experience which we offer at gateways throughout our global network,” said Jim Baxter, Vice President of North America.

Located in the International Terminal’s Boarding Area “A”, the new Emirates Lounge will be a two-level haven for First and Business class passengers comprised of more than 9,500 square feet.

“We are very pleased that Emirates has selected SFO as the site of its first West Coast lounge, and that the airlines’ service continues to grow as it links the Bay Area, Silicon Valley and San Francisco to Dubai, India and beyond,” said SFO Airport Director John L. Martin.

All Emirates Lounges feature a business centre with individual work stations and complimentary broadband and wireless LAN access. Emirates Airport Services staff manage the lounge at all times, while on-site chefs ensure passengers have a wide selection of food and beverages round-the-clock featuring both hot and cold dishes. The dining area also offers a full bar service, including champagne.

Starting 2nd February 2012, EK 221 will leave Dubai daily at 0245hrs, arriving at Dallas/Fort Worth at 0905hrs. The return sector, EK 222, leaves Dallas at 1150hrs, arriving at Dubai International Airport at 1220hrs the following day.

From 1st March 2012, EK 229 will leave Dubai daily at 0950hrs and arrive at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) at 1310hrs. EK 230 will depart Seattle at 1710hrs, arriving in Dubai at 1940hrs the following day.

Both services will be operated by Boeing 777 aircraft offering the highest standards of passenger comfort, with luxurious private suites in First Class, lie-flat beds in Business Class and generously-sized Economy Class seats.

Passengers in all classes can lose themselves in the much-enjoyed ICE entertainment system. There are more than 1,200 channels of on-demand entertainment to choose from, including 200 movies from around the world, 100 TV channels, more than 500 audio channels, 100 video games and news, sports and business headlines.

Customers can also look forward to gourmet food in all cabins and seamless transfers to a global network of over 100 destinations through Emirates’ state-of-the-art Terminal 3 hub in Dubai.

With a fleet of 157 aircraft and now also the largest A380 operator in the world, Emirates currently flies to 114 destinations in 67 countries.

Services to Basra, Geneva and Copenhagen have already started this year. Flights to St Petersburg begin on 1st November, with Baghdad following suit as of 13th November. Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires become new links into South America from 3rd January 2012. On February 1st 2012, Emirates will launch its 20th and 21st destinations in Africa, with a five times weekly linked service to Zambia and Zimbabwe.
