The Latest Travel Scam

It’s amazing how creative thieves have become at getting people to send them money. The latest scam is detailed in the email below which I received from a fellow travel writer. I knew it wasn’t them but I wasn’t 100% but instead of replying to the email I sent them a Facebook message. I later found out that the criminals hacked into that account as well but luckily they didn’t reply. If they did I would’ve asked them to answer some questions about our encounters to see if it was really them. Well, this morning I read Chris Elliott’s newsletter and found this story “Email scam cost me $6,600 — can you get it back?

It turns out this email is running ramped and educated people are falling for it. The point I’m trying to make is to pass the word around to your contact list just in case someone hacks into your account. If they do you won’t be able access it when they lock you out and you don’t want your friends/family/colleagues to empty their pockets.

Hello,
This message may be coming to you as a surprise but we need your help.Few days back we made an unannounced vacation trip to London,UK. Everything was going fine until last night when we got mugged on my way back to the hotel.

They Stole all cash, credit cards and cellphone but thank God we still have our life and passports.Another shocking is that the hotel manager has been unhelpful to me for reasons I don't know.

I'm writing you from a local library cybercafe..We reported to the police and after writing down some statements that's the last we had from them.I contacted the consulate and all we keep hearing is they will get back to us.

I need you to help me out with a loan to settle our bills here so we can get back home tomorrow. I'll refund the money as soon as I get back. All we need is $2,550..Let me know if you can get me the money then I tell you how to get it to me.Thanks. Kevin and Sue

So apparently this guy's water bill was INSANELY high - and he contacted the water company to find out what was going on. Finally one day he stayed home from work to see if anything was going on at home when he wasn't there:

Apparently the cat does this all day long every day.

Live Pictures of the NYC Blizzard

Can’t be in NYC for the blizzard? Check out these D.O.T. webcams for a live picture. What’s nice about these traffic cams (all 228 of them) is that you can choose which streets/intersections you want to view in all five boroughs.

Spanair Airlines Surprises Passengers on Christmas Eve

Great job by Spanair Airlines on Christmas Eve. Passengers from Barcelona to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (flight# JK5208) found something more than a suitcase when they claimed their baggage. The conveyor belt was not only delivering their bags but personalized gifts for each and every traveler. Here’s the video.

American Airlines Offering 15% Off Booking on AA.com

I just received this email from American Airlines:

As a valued customer, we want to inform you that Expedia® has chosen to make American Airlines tickets more difficult to find on Expedia® sites. We are committed to ensuring that you are always presented with the lowest available fares on American, so we regret that Expedia® has chosen not to feature our fares. You may still purchase American Airlines flights on AA.com, our newly re-designed website, as well as many other online travel sites. For more information, please click here.

To thank you for your continued business, we are pleased to offer you an extra 15% off* when you book your next flight on AA.com before December 31, 2010. Simply visit www.aa.com, and use the promotion code below for your next flight.

Promotion Code: LPQK4C7XW9YB

Editor's note: I have a feeling this might be 2011's new trend for the airline industry - to cut out the middle man and drive more traffic and sales (including hotels, packages, car rentals...) to their own sites.
